Kunstrasen
With a Little Help of My Friends
The artist kunstrasen is internationally known for his stencil art, in which he reproduces the motifs he creates with the help of templates. His works, borrowed from pop culture and graffiti, thus pose questions about authenticity, imitation and mass production through the technique itself. In terms of content, they often contain a certain irony or even sarcastic allusions to socio-political or art-scientific issues.
These aspects are also literally contained in his pseudonym kunstrasen: After all, 'Kunstrasen' (artificial turf) is a synthetic product that is imitated from nature. In relation to art, the question is: Hasn't it always been that artificiality that distinguishes art from nature? An artificiality that is subtly hidden in the sense of its "inauthenticity" or that is exaggerated in its artificial nature and obviously expressed in art. The artist himself rather decided on the name because he was enthusiastic about the rapid and - in the context of street art at best unnoticed - spread of motifs: the "-rasen” thus metaphorically indicates the rapid speed of creation and reproduction thanks to the stencil technique, as it in German means ‘ to drive fast’ or ‘ with a lot of speed’.
kunstrasen has already lived in Canada and Great Britain, where he completed a design degree. Since then, the works of the artist, who currently lives in Baden-Württemberg, have received international recognition.
