1010

Born in Poland in 1979, 1010 explores the mechanisms of perception, visual systems of signs, and the ways in which reality is shaped by experience, social structures, and individual imagination. He is best known for his distinctive “Holes,” “Abysses,” and “Portals”: precisely composed fields of color that appear to open into depth, transforming the two-dimensional surface into an illusionary void. Their balanced, almost seductive color schemes draw the eye in, while their spatial effect destabilizes our perception. At the core of 1010’s work is a conceptual and serial system that he continues to develop and expand. He applies this visual language to monumental murals as well as to canvas, aluminum, and hand-cut paper. Alongside these works, he also creates monochrome, organic figures that shift between birds, worms, and imaginary creatures, generating a darker and more surreal atmosphere. 1010’s works have been presented internationally in public space, galleries, and urban art festivals. One of his best-known interventions was created on an approximately 4,500-square-meter section of motorway in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. He has a particular connection to Hamburg and the Affenfaust Galerie. In 2014, as part of the KNOTENPUNKT Festival, he created a mural in Bleicherstraße that remains on view today. In 2021, “Anatta” followed on Schomburgstraße in Altona-Altstadt as the second Hamburg mural realized in collaboration with the Affenfaust Galerie. The work refers to the Buddhist concept of the “non-self” and connects this idea with the transformation of a former World War II bunker into a space for culture, community, and alternative energy. Whether in public space or in his gallery works, 1010 creates more than optical effects. His works open up spaces for reflection in which perception, identity, and social reality become visible as mutable constructions.
