Shawn Huckins
I Am Dead, Deceased, and Buried
Shawn Huckin's paintings impress with a contemporary paradox. In his works, he reproduces classic American paintings in a technically outstanding way and provides them with text elements inspired from the Internet or contemporary design. Epic-looking portraits, landscapes or pastoral scenes from past centuries are thus humorously transposed into the present as a backdrop.
In his current series, "Dirty Laundry," Huckins takes the style of 18th and 19th century European portraiture and merges it with the depiction of simple fabrics of his own clothing. The former expression of wealth and class is thus thwarted, leaving us to ponder the nature of clothing and uniforms, as well as the justification of status - even in today's world.
Huckins now lives and works in Denver, Colorado. His work is represented in private and public collections worldwide, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA, the Tucson Museum of Art, the TIA Collection, and the Vicki Myhren Gallery at the University of Denver. Huckins has received a variety of grants and fellowships and his work has appeared in publications such as Forbes, Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose Magazine, Huffington Post, New American Paintings, The Jealous Curator, and The Advocate. Huckins completed his art studies at Keene State College in New Hampshire and at the University of Wollongong in Australia.
