Johannes Kersting
Johannes Kersting examines the socio-psychological and cultural conditions of the visual representation of spaces and landscapes. He focuses on the constant interplay between reality and staging. Kersting uses staging and construction schemes from painting, cinema and video games to trace the narrative and effect mechanisms of popular visual worlds.
The landscape as a highly symbolic projection surface can be understood equally as a mere social fiction, a threatened environment, a threatening elemental force or as a utopian place of a harmonious coexistence of man and nature. Our attitude towards the world, our narrative of human existence, can always be sensed in the way they are depicted. To create these imaginary pictorial spaces, Kersting uses various media techniques, from classic photography and computer graphics to AI-supported image generation. This enables him to extract specific formulations from the omnipresent flood of images and to condense them in the medium of painting. The contrast between chance and construction characterizes both the painterly work process and the resulting aesthetics of representation. The experience of the spaces and places altered by human hands in the picture creates moments of pathos, beauty and sublimity, but also melancholy, the feeling of loss, loneliness and decay. For Kersting, these categories of human existence are welcome qualities of image-making in order to reveal the levels of meaning of the visibility of landscape and its modes of observation.
