Tomislav Topic
Interplay
Making color feel tangible. - That is the intention of Tomislav Topic. With his art, he creates universally understandable color spaces. His expansive installations, works on paper, sculptures, holograms and paintings can be discovered all over the world. The respective form of his works follows the sole purpose of giving color space, Topic explains. His color systems appear self-contained and at the same time also convey a poetic presence and openness that is partly characterized by planned coincidence. The colors seem to detach themselves from the ground and the surface, in part to float or to take on a life of their own. The clearly thought-out compositions and precise color arrangements do not oppose purely intuitive perception, but actually reinforce it in a fascinating way.
His current exhibition at Paul Roosen Contemporary presents two of his work series, each of which focuses differently on the medium of color. The "Interplay" series shows four layers of color each using painted, semi-transparent fabric to create a moiré effect. For his "Schlagschnur" works on view in the showcase, Topic stretches woolen threads onto a frame and brushes them with paint. By manually snipping individual lengths of wool onto a canvas, the paintings on display are finally created.
For more than a decade, Tomislav Topic's artwork has received international recognition. The artist, who lives in Berlin and Brandenburg, is regularly invited to exhibitions and artist residencies in Europe as well as the USA, China, Mauritius or Georgia. He has already taught as a lecturer at various universities and wants to focus the view of our environment with his work.
