Nico Sawatzki

Nico Sawatzki's exhibition “Zwischen wahr und werden” immerses us in worlds of memory. His series of works created for the exhibition "Schattenfuge'' shows paintings that suggest abstracted landscapes and moods of light. If we look for a while, blink or close our eyes, we may remember a special moment that never seems quite tangible due to its fleeting nature. Sawatzki wants to sensitize us to precisely these subtle, individual in-between acts. For the artist, what we define as our respective truth is to be thought of as a dynamic and processual concept. Truth, in this sense, is a multi-layered conglomeration of memories, present and future imaginings. By overlaying a multitude of layers of spray paint and acrylic glazes, Sawatzki's works oscillate between condensation and dissolution. He understands the painting process as a kind of negotiation with mental pictorial spaces that can bundle and evaporate, but never stand still.

Nico Sawatzki was born in 1984 in Regensburg, where he also lives and works today. He has been active as a graffiti artist since 1997 and as a freelance artist since 2012. His works have been present in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Germany, Luxembourg, the USA and Canada. In 2021, his works were shown for the first time in South Korea. Nico Sawatzkis is represented in many private collections and recently received the cultural promotion Award of the City of Regensburg.
