André Schulze
Mona Lisa with Cigarette
With “Mona Lisa with Cigarette”, André Schulze invites viewers on a fascinating journey through art history and contemporary reinterpretation. His works reimagine iconic images with irony and precision: The Mona Lisa appears with a pixelated face and a burning cigarette—an insightful nod to the digital age and the mythologization of old masters.
Alongside his globally sought-after pixelated bouquets, which have fetched high prices at auctions, Schulze presents historical paintings that he meticulously reworks, giving them new meaning and bringing them into the present. A particular mystery in the exhibition is a supposed Picasso: only the back of the canvas is visible, signed by the master himself. But what lies on the front? That secret will only be revealed to the buyer.
The exhibition space itself plays with the concept of a classical museum. Carefully curated staging creates the illusion of standing among old masters—until one realizes that nothing here remains untouched. Schulze subtly alters traditional artworks, questioning our perception of history and its artistic legacy. The result is a dialogue between past and present that invites the viewer to reflect.
Mona Lisa with Cigarette is both a tribute to art history and a playful deconstruction of its myths.
André Schulze (*1982) completed his fine art studies in 2013 in his hometown of Dresden, graduating as a “Meisterschüler” (master student). Since then, his art has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions and has attracted international attention, especially in recent years.
