Jiangdong Wang
Jiangdong Wang - pictorial spaces between tradition and influence
Jiangdong Wang is a Chinese painter and father of the Berlin-based artist Xiyao Wang. Although little public information is available about his own artistic work, he is considered a formative figure in his daughter's artistic development. He introduced her to the world of painting at a young age by familiarizing her with classical Chinese techniques and Western art movements. Exhibition catalogs, monographs and early copying exercises shaped her exploration of the medium, as did her family environment, which was steeped in artistic creativity.
Wang's own works reflect a deep connection with Chinese aesthetics - in particular with the concept of “empty space” (留白), which he passed on to his daughter as a central design element. His works are characterized by a quiet intensity in which tradition, contemplative forms and painterly restraint are condensed into poetic pictorial spaces.
Jiangdong Wang and his daughter Xiyao Wang are being presented together in a gallery for the first time as part of the “Conjunktion” exhibition. The juxtaposition reveals not only cross-generational parallels, but also independent artistic positions that emerge from a common visual language and yet take very different paths. In this dialog between origin, influence and individual handwriting, it becomes clear how deeply rooted the connection between the two artists is - and how fruitfully it is carried on into the present.
