Mara

Mara (b. 1995) is a contemporary artist whose practice explores image, narrative, and staging across a wide range of media. From an early age, drawing became his natural language—a way to express ideas and tell stories. In 2011, he created a character with a cross-shaped face that has since become the central figure of his work and the foundation of his distinctive visual universe. Deliberately neutral and free from any fixed identity, the character does not represent a specific individual but instead has the potential to represent everyone, functioning as a universal and instantly recognisable narrative device. Over time, this character has evolved into a vehicle for reflection and visual storytelling. Because communication lies at the heart of Mara's artistic practice, it serves as a kind of spokesperson through which he explores everyday life, social structures, and contemporary society with both critical distance and imagination. His works address themes such as ecology, technology, and modern society, while also examining more intimate questions surrounding human nature, relationships, identity, and love. Working across painting, sculpture, design, drawing, and mural art, Mara has developed a cohesive and continuously evolving artistic universe. His works can be found in cities around the world, demonstrating the universal appeal of his visual language, which transcends cultural and geographical boundaries. They invite viewers to pause, reflect on the pace of contemporary life, and reconsider their place within society.
