Julia Sachau

Julia Sachau’s works emerge from a tension between controlled composition and gestural intervention. Calm, meticulously layered color gradients form the ground upon which the artist places dynamic, impasto applications of paint that move across the surface like fleeting traces. These forms appear both spontaneous and precisely set—they evoke movements of water, currents, or waves. The pictorial space remains largely open: color does not function as a field, but as an event in space. Sachau’s visual language is closely tied to her biographical connection to the sea. The ocean operates less as a subject than as an atmospheric point of departure. Movement, energy, and transformation are translated into abstract form. In the series Ocean Drive, Sachau combines soft, almost meditative color fields with vivid, high-contrast gestures. The works oscillate between stillness and dynamism—between controlled painting and the moment of unpredictability. Julia Sachau lives and works in Hamburg and Lisbon.
