Astrid Wilk
Astrid Wilk's work exists at the intersection of craft and digital visual culture. Through meticulously crafted miniature sculptures at a 1:12 scale, she explores perception, materiality, and social attributions from a feminist perspective. Her deceptively realistic plant and ornamental forms, made from polymer clay, appear both familiar and unsettling. They challenge habitual ways of seeing while subtly addressing the body, consumerism, and cultural codes. Wilk's work calls for a new form of attention and an understanding of irony. In contrast to the dominance of scale and monumentality within the traditional art world, she focuses on the small, the intimate, and the highly detailed. Her miniatures demand closeness—a careful way of looking that resists the rapid consumption of digital imagery. At the same time, she strategically embraces this very digital visual culture: her works become part of algorithmic processes in which likes, comments, and reach are transformed into artistic tools. In this way, she creates hybrid spaces in which art exists simultaneously as both object and content. A defining element of her practice is the use of the so-called cane technique. Multi-coloured strands of polymer clay are assembled into complex patterns and then manipulated so that the design remains intact throughout the entire form. Once sliced, they reveal repeatable, highly detailed image structures. This technique enables Wilk to develop ornamental systems that oscillate between references to nature, artificial construction, and absurdity.
