Robert Indiana

Robert Indiana (1928–2018) was an American artist who gained international renown as a defining figure of Pop Art. He became famous above all for his iconic work LOVE (1965), which became a universal symbol with its clear letters and slanted “O.” Indiana used language, numbers, and symbols as central motifs to reflect on themes such as identity, spirituality, and American culture. His works range from painting and sculpture to public art and continue to shape urban spaces around the world today. Despite his success, Indiana remained critical of commercialization and the transience of fame. His work is considered a bridge between pop art and conceptual art.
