Mário Belém

Mário Belém (b. 1977) worked for many years as a digital illustrator and graphic designer before his desire to return to painting and fully dedicate himself to his artistic practice became irresistible.

Today, he works with equal confidence on intimate studio pieces and large-scale murals, establishing himself as one of the leading figures in Portugal's contemporary urban art scene.

Over the years, Belém has developed a distinctive visual language that is colourful, playful, and deeply narrative. He frequently combines imagery and text to create poetic compositions that balance the familiar with the unexpected. His works explore themes of communication, popular culture, and the contemporary human condition through magical and imaginative visual storytelling.

Alongside his murals, Belém primarily creates paintings on wood, often conceived as sculptural compositions that extend beyond the picture plane. His work has been presented in public spaces as well as in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Portugal and internationally.
